Prologue
56,000 Years Before the Present Day…
She awoke inside the airship to the steady sensations and the sound of flight high above the world, though perhaps the pitch of the vibrations had changed.
Over the monotonous hum she could hear Nebtum’s deep young voice telling the tale of his quest. She lay still, cradled in Rydon’s strong arms, and reminded herself to breathe deeply for all the calm she could summon in the aftermath of so much danger and excitement, while her brother told the story so much like those that lead to the end of all great civilizations. She knew that the ancient Motherland Lemuria had certainly perished in the aftermath of similarly dramatic and cataclysmic events, long before.
From far below, they could still hear the distant thunder of volcanic eruptions, and despite the pitch that sealed the vessel, a scent of burning pervaded the cabin.
Nebtum told of his recent journeys—to Hetharbesh, the enchantment of the river-goddess, the mammoth hunters, the ghost-king, the floating city, and the escape from the temple prison in Lu-Nau. Finally he told of what happened when he arrived with his companions at the Pyramid of Fu in the far southern part of Atlantis.
“We discovered that the High Priest of the Sun no longer allowed worshipers even into the outer court of the Great Temple, and yet he demanded more and more sacrifices than ever before. Our requests for audience with the Solar Hierophant were rejected scornfully. So we planned an operation to enter the compound by night, like thieves, and to try to get into the Great Pyramid itself…” As he continued his tale, she almost drifted to sleep again, yet she heard every word.
Finally, when he finished the telling to those companions who did not know what had happened, she nodded. “It has all worked out well enough, Beloved Brother. Or at least in the end, some of us may escape the total devastation.” Though her personal safety might be secured, shock waves continued to shake the airship as it flew. She also felt an unfathomable emptiness in the middle of her body, from the dreadful losses, millennia of cultures destroyed, and millions of people dying far below.
“Ah, but this is not the end,” Nebtum said hopefully.
However, his sister’s tone sobered his expression. “We cannot know.”
